Can a candle flame burn glass?

March 23rd, 2010

ok so i made a large beer bottle into a candle holder, it looks pretty cool. but i’m afraid if i light the candle will the bottle get hot and crack from the heat or something. and will it be dangerous? and its not a large candle its a small candle like the ones you find at a.c. moore.

Well, way back when, wine bottles were used as candle holders without any problem. So, I do not see why not. I wouldn’t let the candle get too low to the glass. The wax could melt along the sides, then you could change the color of the candle and let it accumulate on top of what was there. Then repeat. You will then have a build up of different colors.

I haven’t seen these in a while, but they used to be very popular with "Mateus" bottles in Italian restaurants. Inexpensive way to carry a theme.

But, candle can break a glass. I just had a votive candle which I placed a candle into and the wick had shifted towards the edge of the glass, heating it and then, POP! I couldn’t figure out what it was. I then checked the candle and saw the wick tilted. I think my shelf was a little uneven. And , I think my glass on that holder was too thin. Plus I stupidly put in a fatter candle instead of the smaller ones in the foil. So, you learn something everyday. And, I am a very cautious candle burner. My eyes never leave them. But in your case, I think you will be perfectly fine.

candles always need to be watched.

How do you remove candle wax from a computer tower?

March 21st, 2010

I had a fully melted candle on a candle warmer tip over, and covered the front of my computer tower. It covers both my CD drive and DVD drive, and im afraid to open them, and getting wax into the interior of my computer. How do I remove it, without damaging my computer tower?

You should take your front panel off,it should tell you how in your owners manual, then you can get the wax off of it with really hot water poured over it.Hopefully with that front panel off you can use a hot iron and an old towel to get the wax off the drive panels.put the towel over the front and heat the towel with the iron to suck the wax into the towel. That should take care of the biggest part of it.

What radiation does a candle flame emit?

March 15th, 2010

I’ve tryed using the search engines to answer this question but I guess I don’t know the right search words :P I want to know the benifits of candle light as far as how it copes with your biology. Like how your body adjust itself to the lighting of the sun to generate more of chemical x when your in sunlight. Well Would candle light be the best light source when going to bed in about an hour or less? I want details! :P

Light from a candle is fundamentally different from sunlight. Sunlight is blackbody radiation (filtered through the atmosphere). Candlelight is the result of line emissions from soot.

Google "candle flame spectra"

google "sunlight spectra"

for more information on what the difference between the two imply as far as the light from each.

The bottom line is sunlight contains far more shortwave photons than candlelight. I don’t think candlelight causes the body to generate any vitamin D, for instance. There isn’t enough blue in candlelight.

How do I get candle wax out of carpet?

March 5th, 2010

I was burning a dark purple candle yesterday on our fireplace. I got up just for about 2 minutes to empty the dishwasher and I see that the candle overflowed somehow onto the white carpet. It’s a berber, if that helps. Is it true that i can put down papertowels and run a warm iron over it?

get a brown paper bag from your grocery store – maybe several. place the brown bag over the wax and then place a iron on the highest setting on the bag. move in a circular motion. the heat gets the wax soft and the paper bag absorbs the wax. replace the bag often and do this all long as you need to remove all the wax. this really works!!! good luck to you!!!
